Drive from Arusha to Umbwe Gate (1,600m) for park registration and meet your support crew.
Start your challenging ascent through the dense rainforest. The trail is steep and sustained from the beginning.
Reach Umbwe Camp (2,940m) in the late afternoon. The camp offers limited space in the forest.
Leave the rainforest and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail remains steep and challenging.
Reach Barranco Camp (3,950m) with stunning views of the Barranco Valley and the famous Barranco Wall.
Tackle the famous Barranco Wall - a scramble that looks more difficult than it actually is.
Reach Karanga Camp (3,995m) for acclimatization. This shorter day helps with altitude adjustment.
Climb to Barafu Camp (4,673m) through alpine desert terrain. The trail is steep and rocky.
Arrive at Barafu Camp for early lunch. Rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the summit attempt.
Early dinner followed by a comprehensive summit briefing. Try to sleep before the midnight wake-up call.
Wake up around midnight for a light snack and begin your summit attempt in the darkness.
After 5-7 hours of climbing, reach Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim at sunrise.
Continue along the crater rim for about an hour to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - the highest point in Africa!
Descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
Reach Mweka Camp (3,100m) for dinner and a well-deserved night's sleep after your accomplishment.
After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m).
Receive your summit certificate at the gate - gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak, green for Stella Point.
Transfer back to your hotel in Arusha for a hot shower and celebration dinner.

The Umbwe Route is recommended ONLY for experienced trekkers with prior high-altitude hiking experience. It is the steepest and most challenging route on Kilimanjaro with minimal acclimatization time. You should be in excellent physical condition and have experience with sustained steep ascents at altitude. This route is not suitable for first-time high-altitude trekkers.
The Umbwe Route has a lower success rate (approximately 70%) compared to other routes due to its steep, sustained ascent profile and shorter acclimatization time. The rapid altitude gain increases the risk of altitude sickness. However, experienced climbers with proper preparation can achieve success. We maintain a 1:2 guide-to-client ratio on summit night for additional safety and support.
The best climbing seasons are June to October when conditions are driest. The steep sections of the Umbwe Route can become slippery and more dangerous during wet conditions. We do not recommend attempting this route during the rainy seasons (April-May and November). Even in dry season, the route requires extra caution due to its steepness.
