Known as the "Coca-Cola Route," Marangu is Kilimanjaro's most established and hut-based climbing route
Sleep in basic mountain huts with bunk beds, providing more shelter and comfort than tent camping.
The only route where you ascend and descend via the same trail, offering familiar terrain on your way down.
70% success rate on our 6-day itinerary, suitable for those who prefer hut facilities and a shorter climb.
Huts offer basic amenities including dining areas and shared toilet facilities at each campsite.
Gradual slopes and well-maintained trails make this the least technically difficult route.
Standard 5-day option available, but we recommend 6 days for better acclimatization and success.

Our recommended 6-day itinerary for better acclimatization on the classic hut route
Drive from Arusha to Marangu Gate (1,860m) for park registration and meet your guide and porters.
Start your ascent through the dense montane rainforest. Watch for monkeys and colorful birdlife.
Reach Mandara Hut (2,720m) in the afternoon. Settle into your shared hut accommodation.
Your guide will provide a briefing about the trek ahead and answer any initial questions.
After breakfast, leave the rainforest and enter the heath and moorland zone with shorter vegetation.
Enjoy your first clear views of Mawenzi Peak and distant views of Kibo Peak as you ascend.
Reach Horombo Hut (3,720m), a large complex that accommodates both ascending and descending climbers.
Rest and acclimatize at this important altitude. Hydrate well and monitor for any altitude symptoms.
Hike to Zebra Rocks (4,020m) for acclimatization, following the "climb high, sleep low" principle.
Return to Horombo Hut for lunch and spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing for tomorrow.
Your guide will provide detailed information about the summit day and check your equipment.
Climb through the increasingly barren alpine desert landscape toward Kibo Hut.
Pass the last watering point and continue across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Reach Kibo Hut (4,703m) in the afternoon. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for your midnight summit attempt.
Wake up around midnight for a light snack and begin your summit attempt in the darkness.
After 5-6 hours of climbing, reach Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim at sunrise.
Continue along the crater rim for about 1-2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - the highest point in Africa!
Descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and refreshment before continuing down to Horombo Hut.
Reach Horombo Hut (3,720m) for dinner and a well-deserved night's sleep after your summit achievement.
After breakfast, descend through the moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate (1,860m).
Receive your summit certificate at the gate - gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak, green for Gilman's Point.
Transfer back to your hotel in Arusha for a hot shower and celebration dinner.
Celebrate your achievement with your guide and crew. Farewell dinner and overnight at your hotel.
Our comprehensive package ensures you have everything needed for a successful climb via the hut route
All Kilimanjaro National Park fees, hut accommodation fees, and rescue fees included.
Certified mountain guides, assistant guides, cook, and porters (maximum 15kg per person).
Three nutritious meals daily, snacks, and treated drinking water throughout the climb.
Shared hut accommodation in Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts with basic sleeping facilities.
Flights to and from Tanzania are not included in the package price.
Accommodation before and after the climb (can be arranged separately).
Gratuities for guides and porters (recommended $200-250 per person).
Personal climbing gear, clothing, and equipment (rental available).
The extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut on the 6-day itinerary significantly increases your summit success chances. The 5-day option has a lower success rate (around 50%) due to rapid altitude gain without proper acclimatization. The 6-day itinerary allows your body to adjust better, making the summit day more manageable and enjoyable while reducing altitude sickness risk.
The huts are basic but provide shelter from the elements. Mandara and Horombo Huts have dormitory-style rooms with bunk beds (4-8 people per room), dining areas, and basic toilet facilities. Kibo Hut is more basic with larger dormitories. Mattresses are provided, but you'll need your own sleeping bag. There's no electricity or heating in the huts, so bring headlamps and warm sleeping bags.
The best climbing seasons are January to mid-March and June to October. These dry seasons offer clearer skies and better trail conditions. The Marangu Route is particularly popular during peak seasons, so book well in advance. April-May and November are rainy seasons with fewer climbers but wetter conditions. December offers a short window between rainy seasons with moderate crowds.
